Desco was formed in the Summer of 1969 (wow, that sounds like a song). In the late 60s, Dick Scott and Gene DeRousie were a couple of hard working guys that met while bowling on the east side of town. Dick owned and operated a TV repair and rental shop at Fort Lewis and McChord AFB. Gene was a technician with the phone company (Ma Bell). Gene was fixing audio electronics for Dick's Fort Lewis business in a shop behind his house when they decided to go into business together and open Desco. The DE in our name comes from Gene's last name (DeRousie) and the SCO from Dicks last name (Scott). So please, do not call us Disco (we were here long before that). Upon our store opening in June of 1969, Desco started out by performing electronic repairs and installations (funny, how service was important back then, too).
Our second generation began working at Desco in 1979, when Jeff Scott (then 15 years old) began coming to work for Desco on the weekends and after school. He would come in and show the adults how to program their VCRs and clean up around the store (yes, that included the bathrooms). By 16, he was doing most of the deliveries and at 17 installed our first custom audio system in a new home. At that time, there were no in-wall speakers or switchers. Jeff cut-in plate-style car speakers in the sheetrock and Gene built a speaker selector from scratch.
Gene retired from Desco about 10 years ago. Jeff is now Dicks partner and 43 years old. He holds many credentials in our industry and runs the day-to-day business. We now have three setup and delivery men, seven full-time custom installers, a project manager, four system designers and a full support staff behind them. We are at the forefront of our profession and can handle almost any type of audio/video installation.
