Desco was formed in the Summer of 1969 (wow, that sounds like a song). In the late 60’s, Dick Scott and Gene DeRousie were a couple of hard working guys that met while bowling on the East side of town. Dick owned and operated a TV repair and rental shop at Fort Lewis and McChord AFB. Gene was a technician with the phone company (Ma Bell). Their business relationship began with Gene repairing audio equipment for Dick’s Fort Lewis business in a shop behind his house. As it goes, they decided to open a business together in town and Desco was formed.
The DE in our company name comes from Gene’s last name (DeRousie) and the SCO from Dick’s last name (Scott). So please, do not call us Disco (we were here long before that)!
Desco opened its doors in June of 1969. We started out as a repair and installation company. We are proud to say that we have been true to our roots for 40 years. Installation and repair is still the cornerstone of Desco. That will never change. We are very proud of our history and commitment to service.
Our second generation began working at Desco in 1979 when Jeff Scott (then 15 years old) began coming to work for Desco on the weekends and after school. He would come in and show the adults how to program their VCR’s and clean up around the store (yes that included bathrooms). By 16 years old, he was doing most of the deliveries and set up and at 17 installed our first custom audio system in a new home. At that time, there were no in-wall speakers or switchers for multiple speakers. Jeff cut-in plate-style car speakers in the sheetrock and Gene built a speaker selector box from scratch.
Gene retired from Desco in 1993 and Jeff is now Dick’s partner. Dick still comes in the store and makes sure Jeff is keeping his nose to the grindstone. Jeff holds many credentials in our industry and runs the day-to-day business. We have nine hardworking souls in our installation and setup team, four system designers and a full support staff behind all of them. We are at the forefront of our profession and can handle almost any kind of audio/video installation or service work.
People often ask us how we have survived so long in such a volatile business (witness all the Big Box stores going out of business). Our success is directly related to our business plan. We are the opposite of self-serve retail. We believe in customer service. Please stop by for a visit or give us a call to consult on your next A/V project.
